【易混淆字】all/whole/entire都是「全部」，但你知道怎樣用才正確嗎？

你有想過為什麼the whole box是對的，但the whole software是錯的嗎？
whole和entire是常見的單字，但你大概沒深思過whole和entire如何使用，
所以今天Engoo要帶你理解它們的用法！

詞性
首先，whole可以當成形容詞、副詞、名詞，
意思都是整體、完整（的／地）；
而entire則是單純的形容詞，意思是「整體、完整的」。
兩者意思近乎一樣，絕大多數時候都可以替換使用，
whole和entire差別在於entire比較強烈、正式一點。

規則
今天，我們要討論的就是whole和entire在都是形容詞狀況下，
兩者的使用規則，同時用一些例子讓你更好了解。
一、whole/entire後面一定要接名詞
形容詞裡面，有一類單字後面一定要接名詞，
就是只能以形容詞＋名詞的型態出現，
這些形容詞不可以自己單獨存在，
用文法來說，就是不能作為補語功能。
這類形容詞除了whole和entire外，
還有像是：outer、inner、former、main等。
（正確） He ate the whole cake.
（錯誤）It’s whole.
了解whole和entire後面一定要接名詞後，
我們接下來要討論他們後面可以接什麼、不能接什麼。

二、the whole/entire只接單數名詞
the whole/entire的後面只能接單數名詞，
同理，a whole/ an entire後面一樣只能接單數可數名詞。
但，有時候想表達「全部＋複數名詞」的概念怎麼辦？
像是「所有老師」、「所有城市」……
這類複數名詞，就要使用：“all the + 複數名詞”。
（錯誤）He watched the whole films in the morning.
（正確）He watched all the films in the morning.
他在早上把這些電影通通看完。
錯誤：
The revolutionaries were discussing how to destroy the entire cities at a certain moment.
正確：
The revolutionaries were discussing how to destroy all the cities at a certain moment.
革命者們正在討論如何在特定的時刻摧毀所有城市。

三、the whole/entire不接不可數名詞
不可數名詞有很多，
像是：wealth、information、advice、rice等等都是不可數名詞。
the whole/entire後面不可以接不可數名詞。
如果想表達「所有＋不可數名詞」的概念怎麼辦？
那就再讓我們請出萬能的“all the + 不可數名詞”！
（錯誤）I will consider the entire advice you gave us.
（正確）I will consider all the advice you gave us.
我會考慮你給我的所有意見。
※凡規則必有例外※
讀書的時候，我最怕聽到老師說凡規則必有例外，
因為那代表有額外的東西需要去記憶。
the whole/entire和特定的不可數名詞有著可以連用的例外，
像是“the whole time”、“the whole truth”、“her whole career”、“his whole life”等。

四、whole/entire 可接複數名詞
剛剛不是才說，whole/entire後面只能接單數名詞嗎？
怎麼那麼快就產生自相矛盾的說法？
再仔細看一下，剛剛是說：
「the whole/entire的後面只能接單數名詞」，
而這裡是說，在沒有冠詞（the/a/an）的情況下，
whole/entire可以接複數名詞！
（錯誤）I don’t believe he can read the whole dictionaries at a time.
（正確）I don’t believe he can read whole dictionaries at a time.
我不相信他可以一次看完所有字典。
