【慣用語】超實用！你知道 "Make it" 加上 to/through等介系詞的5種超道地用法嗎？

常看美劇的各位，可能對於 “make it” 這個口語超常出現的片語，感到既熟悉又陌生。

先來看一段對話：

在這段對話中，Sherya向 Peter 道歉，因為她沒辦法參加他的派對。

但為什麼要說 “make it”，不用大家熟知的 “come” 或 “go” 就好呢？

這次就和Engoo來學學 “make it” 這個片語最常見的5種用法吧！

用法 #1：可以赴約

就像上面的舉例一樣，英語母語者最常用 “make it”，

來表示「可以赴約（to be able to go to some event or place）」。

後面會加上介系詞如 "to" 再接地點、活動。

【例句】

Will you be able to make it to our meeting next Monday?

下週一你能加入會議嗎？

I can’t make it to work tomorrow. Could you cover for me please?

我明天沒辦法上班。可以麻煩你幫我代班嗎？

上面句子中的 “make it” 都可以用 “come” 或 “go” 代替，

但差別在於 “make it” 更強調「有沒有辦法去」，

例如，如果某活動地點距離太遠，需要耗費太多時間、精神，

這時母語人士比較會用 “make it” 來表示。

再舉個例，假如一對來自紐約的新婚夫妻在距離好幾千公里的夏威夷舉辦婚禮，

致詞的時候可能就會說：

Thanks for making it to this celebration of our love!

謝謝各位遠道而來，一起慶祝我們的愛情。

We want to acknowledge a few people who couldn’t make it to the wedding.

我們想要特別提到幾位無法前來參加婚禮的親友。

在這幾個例子中，致詞者當然可以說 “come”，

但他們用了 “make it”，因為從遠渡重洋來到夏威夷，

可是得花很多時間、精神的（還有錢）！

用法 #2：抵達目的地

“Make it” 的第二種用法是指「抵達（reach/arrive）」，

特別是當那個地方很難到達，或是旅途艱辛時，

更會使用 “make it” 這個用法。

一樣，後面會先加介系詞再接地點。

【例句】

After a long, bumpy flight, we finally made it to Turkey!

經過搖搖晃晃的長途飛行，我們終於來到土耳其了！

這個 “make it to” 的用法後面通常都會加上 “on time（準時）” 或 “in time（及時）” 等等。

【例句】

I had a stomach ache but I still made it to school in time for my final exams!

我胃痛，但我還是及時趕上期末考了！

用法 #3：取得資格或達成目標

“Make it” 的第三個道地用法是「取得資格（Qualify）」，

最常在運動賽事等等的比賽、排名項目中看到。

可以說 "make it into the final（闖進總決賽）" 或 "make it to the first/second/third place（奪得第一／二／三名）"

【例句】

A woman from my town made it into the Olympics.

我家鄉的一個女性運動員取得了奧運的資格。

England didn’t make it into the World Cup Finals.

英格蘭沒有打進世界盃總決賽。

I can’t believe we made it to first place in the science contest!

我無法相信我們竟然能在科學競賽奪得第一！

這篇是有關一首在人氣排行榜第三名的歌曲：

“Make it” 也可以用來描述某人在事業、學業上「達成目標」，

【例句】

After 12 years at the same law firm, he finally made it to partner.

在同一間法律事務所熬了12年，他終於晉升合夥人。

用法 #4：飛黃騰達

第四個 “make it” 的用法是指一個人在他的領域「飛黃騰達（to be successful）」，

特別是用在該領域競爭激烈、不易成功的情況下，

通常出現這種用法時，也是指某人「名利雙收（to become rich and famous）」。

【例句】

It’s hard to make it in Hollywood, because there are so many talented actors.

想要在好萊塢出人頭地非常困難，因為有天份的演員實在太多了。

J.K. Rowling finally made it as a writer with her first Harry Potter book.

J.K. 羅琳終於以她的第一本《哈利波特》系列書，成為成功的暢銷作家。

相關用法還有 “make it to the top（達到巔峰）”、 “make it big（功成名就）”，

都可以和 “make it” 替換使用。

就算你所指的對象不是真的很有名，只要你認為他是「人生勝利組」，也是可以用 “make it” 喔！

【例句】

My best friend has really made it in life. He’s got a successful career, a beautiful home and a loving family.

我最好的朋友真的是人生勝利組。他事業成功，有漂亮的房子，和充滿愛的家庭。

用法 #5：生還、生存、撐過去

美劇也會常常出現「生死存亡之際」的劇情，

例如嚴重的疾病、車禍、末日等，

在這種情況下「生存」下來的生還者，就可以用 “make it” 這個動詞片語。

後面可以加上 through，更能表達「穿越困難」的意象喔～

【例句】

My neighbor got in a terrible car crash and frankly, we didn’t expect him to make it.

我鄰居出了一場嚴重的車禍，而且說實話，我們都不覺得他能活下來。

母語人士也會把這個用法套用在其他不會有真的「生命危險」的困境。

【例句】

Our company has made it through many recessions.

我們公司已經撐過了好幾次經濟衰退。

I wouldn’t have made it through my divorce if I didn’t have the support of my friends.

如果沒有朋友的鼓勵，我絕對沒辦法從離婚的憂傷走出來。
