【英文文法】Besides, Except 分不清楚嗎？一次搞懂「除了」的用法！

明明中文都翻作「除了」，你分得清楚 besides/ except嗎？

究竟「包含、不包含」的用法該怎麼用？apart from 又是哪一種意思呢？

 

先來小試身手一下！

Q：Allen 和 Betty 究竟會不會去派對呢？

1. Except for Allen and Betty, Cherry will  go to the party.

2. Besides Allen and Betty, Cherry will go to the party.

第一個例子中，Allen 和 Betty 不會去派對！

而第二個例子則是會去派對！

是不是一頭霧水呢？別擔心！今天就用圖＋文，

來幫助大家釐清「除了」的用法吧！

這樣的「除了」介係詞/ 副詞，總共有三大種：

1. 包含
2. 不包含
3. 通用（視句意/ 前後文來決定是否包含）

1.「包含」用法 — 「除了...之外；還有...」

用於附加說明，後方所指的人事物，被包含在內，

與主要句子/前一句，可能為同一屬性/性質/褒貶義等等，

分為介係詞與副詞用法：

(1) 介係詞：in addition to/besides

後面接名詞或動名詞

【例句】

1. After Mary gains a huge sum of money, she buys an apartment.
In addition to/ Besides the apartment, she plans to travel around the world.  

在瑪麗得到一大筆錢後，她買了公寓。除了公寓之外，她還計畫環遊世界。

2. In addition to/ Besides the astronaut, there is still extraterrestrial.

除了太空人之外，還有外星人。

(2) 副詞：in addition/ besides/ on top of that

後面加逗號，逗號後面為完整句子 [主詞+動詞+(受詞)] 。

【例句】

After Mary gains a huge sum of money, she buys an apartment.

In addition/ Besides/ On top of that, she plans to travel around the world. 

在瑪麗得到一大筆錢後，她買了公寓。除此之外，她還計畫環遊世界。

【補充】

addition前面的add- 字首就是「加上」，addition是名詞，指增加的事物。

2.「不包含/排除在外」用法 — 「除了…之外，其他都…」

用於強調差異性，後方所指的人事物，被排除在外，

與主要句子/前一句，可能為不同屬性/性質/褒貶義等等，

分為介係詞與連接詞用法：

(1) 介係詞：except/except for

後面接名詞或動名詞

【例句】

Except for this requirement, I can accept your offer.  

I can accept your offer except/ except for this requirement.

除了這項要求之外，我接受你的提議。

【補充】

except 和 except for 有細微差別，

except 常涉及相同主題，通常不放句首；

except for 常涉及不同主題，並有些許惋惜之意，可放句首。

(2) 連接詞：except/except that

後面接動詞/完整句子

【例句】

In my opinion, this apartment is pretty good except/ except that its location is a little bit inconvenient.

我覺得這間公寓除了位置有一點不方便之外，其他都相當好。

3.「通用」 — 視句意/ 前後文決定包不包含

※只有介係詞用法，後面接名詞或動名詞

介係詞：aside from/ apart from/ other than

【例句】

1. I went shopping this afternoon. Apart from buying a beautiful dress,

I also bought the high-heeled shoes.

我今天下午去逛街。除了買了一件漂亮的洋裝之外，我還有買高跟鞋。

根據句意，這裡的apart from解釋為「除了…之外，還有」，等於besides。

2. Other than the entrance fee, this amusement park is attractive.  

除了入場費之外，這個遊樂園很吸引人。

根據句意，這裡的other than 解釋為「除了…之外，其它都」，等於except。
