loose cannon 失控的人、脫韁野馬
在航海時代，船隻上都配有武器，
cannon就是船上的大砲。
為了避免開火時失控，多半會用繩子將其固定，
而loose cannon就是沒有被固定的大砲，
引申為失控的人、脫韁野馬、不定時炸彈。
【例句】
After divorcing Gina, he was regarded as a loose cannon by his friends.
自從和Gina離婚後，他朋友都認為他變成脫韁野馬，非常失控。
【例句】
She's a loose cannon who might do more damage to our team.
她是一個不受控的人，可能會對我們團隊造成傷害。

scuttlebutt原本是用於儲水的木桶，
但因為航海時，大家都會聚集在那裡聊八卦，
所以scuttlebutt就引申為謠言、八卦，
是個非正式的用法。

謠言指出，戰爭很快就要結束了。
