【主題單字】即時行事、事半功倍、日以繼夜、木已成舟的英文說法

1. a stitch in time (saves nine) 及時行事，事半功倍
stitch做動詞有縫紉的意思，a stitch in time (saves nine)字面上意義是及時縫一針可以省九針，
這句話應該不難理解，當衣服有破洞時，及時縫上就可以省去因為拉扯，
破洞變大而需多耗費的九針，也就是及時行事可以事半功倍。
【例句】
Tina: There is a hole on our roof. We should fix it right away.
Tina: 我們家的屋頂有破洞。應該要馬上修補它。
Jack：Sure. A stitch in time saves nine.
Jack：當然。現在不趕快補，之後的麻煩會更大。
2.like clockwork 非常規律、極為準時
clockwork是鐘錶的零件、
發條裝置，鐘錶的設計都是十分精密的，
每個零件都要精準無誤才能讓鐘錶順利運作，
所以就可以用clockwork來形容非常規律或非常準時的意思。
【例句】
Since the recent improvements to the service, the trains are running like clockwork.
自從最近改善服務後，火車都運行都十分準時。
3. the 11th hour 最後一刻
the 11th hour一般認為出自《聖經》，在聖經的寓言故事中，
天國裡的葡萄園主人雇用工人時，不論晚來或早來的人皆會拿到相同工資：
“And when those came who were hired about the 11th-hour, they each received a denarius.”，
而句中the 11th hour就是猶太人所說的「第十一時」，
相當於日落收工前的下午五點，因此有「最後一刻」的意思。
【例句】
The game was delayed at the eleventh hour.
比賽在最後一刻被取消了。
4. around the clock 不眠不休、日以繼夜
around有環繞、四處、附近的意思， around the clock就像是環繞時鐘跑一般，
而有不眠不休、日以繼夜的意思。
【例句】
That convenience store is open around the clock. We can find some food for late night supper there.
那間便利商店24小時營業。我們可以去那找些食物當消夜。
5. kill time 打發時間
kill time這個用法大家應該不陌生，字面上是殺時間的意思，也就是指打發時間。
【例句】
We have to wait for 3 hours in the hotel. Let’s take a nap to kill time.
我們還需要在飯店裡等3小時。小睡一下打發時間吧!
6. in the nick of time 緊要關頭
nick做名詞表示的是缺口、裂痕。in the nick of time，
在時間的裂縫中，表示時間非常緊急、刻不容緩，
，常和arrive...、get there...、happen...、save something...連用。
【例句】
The plane is going to take off, and John just got the airport in the nick of time.
飛機將要起飛，John剛剛在緊要關頭趕到機場了。
7. The ship has sailed. 木已成舟
The ship has sailed. 是一個常用的美式成語，字面上是船已經開走了的意思，
引申為一個人錯失良機，事情已經成定局了。
【例句】
Ken: What did Gina say after watching the movie with me last month? I have two tickets for "The Avengers", maybe we can...
Ken: Gina上個月和我一起看完電影後有說什麼嗎?我這裡有兩張復仇者聯盟的票，也許我們...
Kelvin: Hey, that ship has sailed. She’s got a boyfriend now.
Kelvin: 嘿，你已經錯失良機了。她現在有男朋友了。
8. call it a day 收工、下班
call it a day不知道的人可能會以為是「就叫他一天」的意思，
但他其實是在指收工、下班，今天就到此為止的意思，
是一個很常見的用法，如果收工時間是在晚上的話也可以用call it a night替換。
【例句】
It’s already 10 p.m. Let’s call it a night!
已經晚上10點了，今天就到此為止吧！
