近幾年台灣地震不斷，澳洲、美國也相繼遭受野火肆虐，不管是世界上哪個角落發生自然災害，通常都會成為國際新聞，此篇將介紹自然災害相關單字，以及在新聞中常見詞彙。

各種自然災害
Hurricane 颶風／Typhoon 颱風／Cyclones 氣旋
在海洋上形成且會帶來大量降雨和極強風力的氣候現象稱作 "tropical cyclones（熱帶氣旋）"，在中文全部都叫做「颱風」，那到底要如何分辨這三個單字？
其實它們是以區域來劃分：
北大西洋或北東太平洋的颶風一般稱為 "hurricane"；北西太平洋的颱風則稱為 "typhoon"；如果在南太平洋或印度洋就叫做 "cyclones"。
Residents of the town were told to leave to escape the approaching hurricane.
鎮上村民被告知撤離，以躲避即將到來的颶風。
It's common for this country to experience cyclones this time of year.
每年這個時候，這個國家都會遭遇颶風襲擊。

Tornado 龍捲風
"tornadoes（或說是 "twisters"）" 也是有強風的風暴。和颱風不一樣的是，龍捲風可以出現在沒有水域的地方。
Strong tornado winds can cause lots of damage by lifting and throwing heavy objects during a storm.
在暴風雨期間，強勁的龍捲風會把重物捲起來再甩出去造成破壞。
Local residents were on high alert because of the tornado warning.
當地居民因為龍捲風警報都處於高緊戒狀態。

Earthquake 地震
地震最常發生在 "fault lines（斷層線）"上 ，而地震強度是由「芮氏地震規模」測量，英文則是 "the Richter scale"。
An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale struck early in the morning.
早上發生的地震芮氏規模 5.1 。
在談論地震的規模、強度時，英文則是使用 "magnitude" 一詞。
The quake had a magnitude of 4.5.
那個地震強度 4.5。
地震除了上述例句較短的 "quake" ，小地震我們可以說 "tremors"。
This area experiences tremors often, though they're usually not very strong.
這個地區時常發生小地震，但是規模都不大。
震央稱為 "epicenter"，將這個單字拆開會是「epi- 在...上方＋center 中央」，在震源（hypocenter）的上方也就是「震央」。
The epicenter was about four miles from the city's downtown area.
震央在距離市中心四英里的地方。
餘震的英文也是非常直覺，叫做 "aftershock"。
After the big earthquake, the area experienced aftershocks for several days.
在強震過後，這個地區連續幾天都有餘震。

Wildfire 野火
"wildfires" 是指快速蔓延並覆蓋廣大地區的大火，有時也稱作 "blazes"。
The wildfire caused millions of dollars in damage.
這場野火造成幾百萬的損失。
The blaze destroyed much of the surrounding area.
大火摧毀了附近許多區域。
"spread like wildfire" 如同字面所述，由於野火散播的速度之快，所以這個片語意為「訊息或資訊散播得很快」。
The celebrity's private photos spread like wildfire across the internet.
那位名人的私人照在網路上迅速傳開。

Flood 水災
"Flood" 可以是名詞「水災」，也可以作為動詞「被水淹沒」。
The news announced a flood warning for the entire region.
新聞報導宣布全國水災警戒。
The storm flooded our basement.
這場暴風雨淹沒了我們的地下室。
除了自然災害，"flood" 也可以描述「大量的人湧入」。
The day of the big sale, the store was flooded with shoppers looking for deals.
大促銷那天，大量的顧客湧入這間店尋找折扣。

Drought 乾旱
當長時間沒有降雨時，土地會變得乾燥造成 "drought"。這種乾燥會影響食物的生長，並增加野火的發生機率。
＊發音與 "out" 相似，把 "dr" 放開頭，"t" 放結尾。
Because of the drought, the prices of many vegetables have gone up.
因為乾旱，所以很多菜價都上漲。

Heat wave 熱浪
"heat waves" 就是所謂的「熱浪」。就算沒有像其他自然災害一樣造成破壞，但「熱浪」對人類有相當程度的危險。
Authorities have advised people to stay indoors during the heat wave.
政府建議人民熱浪來潮時待在家裡。

Blizzard 暴風雪
"blizzard" 一詞為「暴風雪」，也意指「大量繁雜的事」。
The airport was full of passengers whose flights had been canceled because of the blizzard.
因為暴風雪造成的班機停駛讓機場人滿為患。

新聞常見詞彙
Catastrophe 大災難
"catastrophe" 泛指「大規模的損壞、大災難」。形容詞為 "catastrophic（災難性的、極差的）"。
Many people shared pictures of the catastrophe on social media.
許多人在社群媒體分享災難的照片。
The damage caused by the tornado was catastrophic.
這場龍捲風造成非常嚴重的損壞。
Intensify 增強
"intensify" 為動詞「增強」之意，新聞中常出現這個單字來表示颱風變強等話題。
Forecasts are warning that the storm may intensify by tomorrow night.
天氣預報警告明晚暴風雨會增強。
The eye of the storm 颱風眼／危險中心
颱風眼或龍捲風中心在天氣預報中常以 "eye" 稱呼，來解釋風暴的移動。
The eye of the storm was moving slowly over the small town.
颱風眼正緩慢地移到小鎮上空。
在與氣候現象無關時，此表達指的是「事件中最困難或緊張的部分」。
With pressure from competitors and the public, the company found itself in the eye of the storm.
在競爭對手和公眾的壓力下，該公司發現自己處在危險的中心。
Aftermath 結束後的一段時間／後果
"aftermath" 是指「戰爭或災害後的一段時間」。
Residents worked together to rebuild the town in the aftermath of the storm.
居民在風暴過後一起重整小鎮。
Toll 傷亡
在討論災害或事故時，"toll" 指的是「死亡或受傷的人數」。
The death toll is expected to rise as rescue workers continue searching through the damaged area.
在搜救隊員繼續搜索受災地區的同時，預計死亡人數還會增加。
Responder 搜救人員、急救人員
災害發生時，專業訓練的人會進入受災區搜救倖存者並幫助需急救的人。這些專業人員稱為 "responders"，有時為 "first responders（第一線搜救人員）"。
The local government sent in a team of responders to search for survivors.
當地政府派遣搜救隊尋找倖存者。
Casualty 傷亡人員
"casualty" 是指「因戰爭或災害而死亡的人」。
We are happy to report that the earthquake caused no casualties.
我們很高興宣布此次地震並無傷亡人員。
Evacuation 疏散、撤離
"evacuate" 是指為避免危險而離開某地，名詞變化為 "evacuation"，這個單字在提到災害時很常見。
The government's social media channels had important information regarding evacuation for people in the region.
政府的社群媒體上有關於地區民眾疏散的重要資訊。
Residents were ordered to evacuate the area as soon as possible.
居民被要求快速撤離該地區。
而脫離危險地區的人則稱為 "evacuees（被疏散者）"。
The sports arena became a temporary shelter for many evacuees.
這個體育場成為逃難者的臨時避難所。
Clean-up 整頓、清理
"clean up" 意思是「清理」，名詞則為 "clean-up" 或 "cleanup"，表示災後的清理和復原過程。
The clean-up will take several years and millions of dollars.
這次災後復原的過程會花好幾年、好幾百萬。
