【英文片語】 break 除了打破還有什麼意思？10個與 break 相關的英文片語及單字

break into 闖入
如果要說有人闖進我家，直覺會想到 “intrude” 或 “get into”，但它們都沒有那種「闖入」的感覺，這時候用 “break” 是不是就很有意境！
【例句】
Yesterday, someone broke into his apartment and stole all his money.
昨晚有人闖入他的公寓，把錢全部偷光了。
break up 分手
“break up” 在愛情電影或影集很常見，所以大家或多或少應該都有聽過。
【例句】
I just can't believe they broke up. They'd been together for over ten years.
我真的無法相信他們分手了，他們在一起十年多了。
break down 崩潰、故障
遇到故障的情況時，我們可以用 “break down” 來表示一個東西「意外故障」。與意外故障不一樣的是 “shut down”，這個動詞指的是主動讓機器或生意「停止運作」。
【例句】
We are late because our car broke down on the road.
我們遲到是因為汽車在路上拋錨了。
除了可以形容東西意外故障，“break down” 也可以形容一個人「心理崩潰」的狀態。
【例句】
She suffers a nervous breakdown.
她精神崩潰了。（這裡 “break down” 以名詞呈現）
break through 突破
介系詞 “through” 有「通過」的意思，跟 "break" 搭配就有一種「突破」的畫面。
【例句】
Their love breaks through the age gap.
他們的愛突破年齡差的限制。
break one’s words 毀約、食言
中文有「食言」的說法，英文可不是用 eat one's words 來表達，而是用 “break one’s words” 來表示「破壞承諾、毀約」。
【例句】
Don't believe him. He's gonna break his word soon.
不要相信他，很快地，他就會食言了。
有趣的是，給承諾也和 “word” 有關，當有人跟你說 “You have my word.”，表示那個人「向你保證」某事。
break the ice 打破僵局
中文有「破冰」的說法，英文裡的破冰真的就是 “break the ice”。
【例句】
He started the speech with a couple of jokes to break the ice.
演講前他說了幾個笑話來緩解尷尬。

take a break 休息一下
"break" 在這邊的意思是「中斷」、「停止」，“take a break” 讓事情停止一下就是「喘口氣、休息一下」的意思。
【例句】
Take a break! You look exhausted.
休息一下吧！你看起來精疲力竭。
give me a break 饒了我吧！
“give me a break” 是非常口語的用法，有點像是「給我一點空間」、「不要再煩我了」的感覺。
【例句】
Oh! Give me a break. Stop complaining.
噢！饒了我吧！不要再抱怨了。
另一種類似的說法是 “get off my back”，像是讓背上的惡靈下來，別再煩了！
breaking news 即時新聞
如果有看英文新聞應該就會常常看到 “breaking news（即時新聞）”，至於為什麼叫 “breaking news” 是因為即時新聞會打斷原本的節目，而 “breaking” 就是用來形容被中斷的節奏。
【例句】
The best way to report the breaking news is by getting to the scene of the story on time and reporting it as the news is breaking.
要播報即時新聞最重要的就是及時趕到現場，在事情還正在發生時就播報。
heartbreaking 令人心碎
不管中文還是英文，我相信大家人生難免有「心碎」的感受，這種難過到心碎的感覺用 “sad” 是完全無法表達出來的，因此直接講 “heartbreaking” 是最好的形容。
【例句】
This movie is so heartbreaking that I cried for one whole hour.
這部電影太令人心碎了，所以我哭了一整個小時。
