【英文片語】two-time 不是兩次的意思嗎？關於時間的英文慣用語大集合！

中文有許多與時間相關的成語和說法，想當然英文也有！這次 engoo 將介紹幾個不僅與 “time” 相關，還有關於時間的慣用語！
Sooner or later 遲早、總有一天
從字面上來看這個慣用語，意思就是「很快或等等」，延伸為「遲早、總有一天」。
【例句】
Sooner or later, I'm going to face the music.
我遲早要自己承擔後果。
【補充】
“face the music” 的意思不是面對音樂，而是「為自己的錯誤承擔後果」喔！
two-time 劈腿
“two-time” 可追溯到 1920 年代的說法 “having two at a time”，意思就是「腳踏兩條船」。
後來縮短成動詞 “two-time” 表示「劈腿」；劈腿的人則可稱為 ‘two-timer”。
注意：two 和 time 中間記得加上 hyphen “-” ，不然會變成兩次的意思喔～
【例句】
When Lisa found out her boyfriend was two-timing her, she was furious.
Lisa 發現男友劈腿時很生氣。

Time is of the essence. 時間寶貴
”essence” 本身意為「本質」，而這當中藏著另一個用法 “be of the essence”，意思是「至關重要、最重要」。所以 “Time is of the essense.” 整句用來表達「時間寶貴」。
類似的說法還有：
- Time is money. 時間就是金錢。
- Every second counts. 每分每秒都很重要。
- Time waits for no one. 時間不等人。
in this day and age 如今
“in this day and age” 意思為「現在這個時代」，當中的 “age” 不僅有「年齡」的意思，也可以當作「年代」使用。
【例句】
In this day and age, it’s hard to imagine life without the internet.
很難想像這個世代沒有網路怎麼生活。
She was appalled to see that so much injustice could exist in this day and age.
她很震驚到現在還有這麼多不公不正的事情。

The ship has sailed. 木已成舟
小編發現英文真的有很多種說法和中文很類似！像是 “the ship has sailed” 和「木已成舟」都有提到船！
當然意思還是有點不一樣的，英文用「船已離港」來表示大勢已去。
【例句】
Tom hesitated for too long on taking this job; now the ship has sailed.
Tom 對於這份工作猶豫太久了，現在想要也來不及了。
The time is ripe. 時機成熟
形容詞 “ripe” 一詞可以表示水果「成熟」可以摘了，而當放到時間上意思則為「時機成熟了」。
【例句】
We managed to sell our house when the time was ripe and made a great profit!
我順利等到對的時機賣掉房子，賺了一大筆！
The time is ripe for the company to expand into international markets.
現在是公司擴展國際市場的好時機。
have time on one’s side 時間很充分
“have soemone on one’s side” 很常出現在吵架的時候，問對方「站誰那邊」。而時間站在誰那邊就代表「某人有充裕的時間」。
【例句】
We don't have to make a final decision till next week, so time is on our side.
我們到下禮拜才要做決定，所以時間還很多。
shelf life 有效期限
小編第一次看到這個字想說為什麼連貨架都有生命，後來發現 “shelf life” 指的是「有效期限」。
另一個比較直覺的有效期限是 “expiration date”，而動詞 “expire” 意為 「過期」。
【例句】
This product has a shelf life of six months if kept in a cool, dry place.
如果放在陰暗乾燥的地方，這個產品的有效期限是六個月。
once upon a time 從前
這個說法很常出現在格林童話或寓言故事當中，其實就是中文的「從前從前」。
【例句】
Once upon a time, there was a small village hidden deep in the mountains.
從前從前，有一座小小的村莊身藏在山中。
not in a million years 這輩子都別想
“not in a million years” 表達「一百萬年都不可能」，這個說法就如同中文裡的「下輩子吧！」，都是比較強烈的說法。而 “never” 可以用來代替 “not”。
【例句】
Not in a million years will I allow the mistake to happen again!
我這輩子不會再犯這樣的錯了！
I will never in a million years get back to him!
我絕對不會跟他復合！

around the corner 不遠處／即將來臨
“around the corner” 不只是可以用來表示「地理位置」，也可以表示「時間」！表示地理位置時，意思為「不遠處」；表示「時間」時，則意為「即將來臨」。
【例句】
There's a great restaurant just around the corner.
不遠處有一間好吃的餐廳。
She is feeling a little depressed at the moment, but I'm pretty sure good times are just around the corner for her.
她現在有點憂鬱，但我確定好事即將發生在她身上了。
in due course 在適當的時候
先來介紹 “due” 這個字，小編在交作業的時候很常看到 “due date”，意思就是「到期日」，而 “due” 意為「到期的」。
“course” 在這裡並不是「課程」的意思，而是從拉丁語 “cursus” 演變來的「河流、小路」。
因此 “in due course” 意為「在適當的時候」。
【例句】
Your application will be reviewed, and you’ll be notified in due course.
我們將審理您的申請，您到時候會收到通知。
