【節慶英文】「鬼門開」不是 "Hell gate opens"？「中元普渡」、「搶孤」、「超度」等中元節習俗用英文怎麼說？

華人最重要的節日之一：中元節即將到來！
在這個節日裡，有「中元普渡」、「搶孤」、「燒金紙」等特殊習俗，
而這些習俗對於西方人來說或許非常陌生，
所以這次 Engoo 就來教大家如何用英文敘述中元節，幫助外國友人理解我們的文化喔！
Ghost Month 鬼月
眾所皆知的「農曆七月」也俗稱「鬼月」，可以直譯為 “Ghost Month” 就好。
The gate to the Underworld (opens/closes) 鬼門（開／關）
「鬼門」可以譯為 “the gate to the Underworld（陰間大門）”。
至於為什麼「陰間」不用 “Hell” 呢？
因為「陰間」、「冥府」指的是死人的去處、等待審判的地方，
而「地獄」，也就是 “Hell”，是被判有罪靈魂的去處，兩者定義不同，
所以 “Underworld” 是最貼切「陰曹地府」的說法喔！
【例句】
The gate to the Underworld opens on the 1st day of the 7th Lunar month, marking the start of the Ghost Month.
鬼門開在農曆七月一日，意味著鬼月的開始。
The spirits get to come back to the world of the living through the gate to the Underworld.
鬼魂可以通過鬼門，再度回到陽間。
（Hungry）Ghost Festival／Zhongyuan Festival 中元節
Yulanpen Festival 盂蘭盆節
「中元節」不同於「清明節」和「墨西哥亡靈節」，
祭拜的不是祖先，而是孤魂野鬼，俗稱「好兄弟」，
英文可以用 “Ghost Festival” 表示，也可以在前面加上 “Hungry” 描述是「餓鬼」。
另一種翻法是直接音譯成 “Zhongyuan Festival” 或 “Chongyuan Festival”，
再另外解釋這個節日的目的、習俗就好。
而對於佛教來說，這個節日稱作「盂蘭盆節」，也是直接音譯成 “Yulanpen Festival”，
再補充解釋就好。
【例句】
On the Zhongyuan Festival in Taoism, or the Yulanpen Festival in Buddhism, people prepare offerings for hungry homeless spirits.
在道教的中元節，或是佛教的盂蘭盆節，人們會準備祭品供奉給孤魂野鬼。
The Ghost Festival is one of the most important festivals in Chinese-speaking countries.
中元節是華人地區最重要的節日之一。

Zhongyuan Pudu 中元普渡
「蛤？真假？」你心中可能會這麼想，但是沒錯！
「中元普渡」可以直接音譯 “Zhongyuan Pudu” 就好，因為這是屬於中文地區特殊的習俗，
所以用原文是最為尊重的說法，一樣可以再另外補充這項習俗的內容就好。
【例句】
On the Hungry Ghost Festival, people hold Zhongyuan Pudu, in which they offer a lot of food to the hungry, homeless spirits.
在中元節，人們會舉辦中元普渡，用大量的食物供奉飢餓的孤魂野鬼。
Wandering／Homeless／Hungry ghosts 孤魂野鬼
Good brothers 好兄弟
「孤魂野鬼」就是指「無家可歸」的鬼魂，可以用 “homeless” 這個字表示，
也可以說 “Wandering”，表示「四處遊蕩的」，
或是像「中元節」的英文一樣用 “hungry ghosts” 表示「餓鬼」，
其中 “ghosts” 也可以替換為 “spirits”。
當然，因為我們說的「好兄弟」是個滿有趣且較尊重的說法，
所以也可以直接翻譯成 “Good brothers” 再接著補充意思喔！
要注意的是，因為普渡拜的鬼魂不會只有一位，所以要用複數表示，
或是 “the + 單數” 來統稱這個群體。
【例句】
On the Ghost Festival, people provide food for wandering spirits out of pity and selflessness.
在中元節，人們出於憐憫及無私之心，會提供食物給孤魂野鬼。
As a sign of respect, you should not refer to them (the wandering spirits) as “ghosts” but “good brothers.”
出於尊敬，不可以稱祂們（孤魂野鬼）為「鬼」，而是要叫「好兄弟」。
Tribute／Offering 貢品／供品
中元普渡會準備的「供品」英文可以說 “tribute” 或 “offering”：
“Tribute” 是指「貢品」，帶有「敬畏」或「尊敬」之意；
“Offering” 是指「供品」，也就是「提供的物品」。
注意，這兩種說法都是可數名詞，要記得用冠詞 a/an/the 或是複數表示喔！
【例句】
In addition, the tributes serve as a gesture of peace, preventing the wandering spirits from harming the world of the living.
此外，準備供品也是為了向孤魂野鬼們表示和平，希望祂們不要禍害人間。
Normally, people don’t prepare bananas, plums, and pears as offerings of Zhongyuan Pudu, for in the Taiwanese language, the pronunciations of these three fruits resemble those of “invite (tsio),” “you (li),” and “come (lai)” respectively.
通常人們不會在中元普渡供奉香蕉、李子和梨子，因為在台語，這三種水果分別聽起來和「招」、「你」、「來」一樣。
【補充】
其實也有法師、民俗專家認為拜這三種水果沒關係喔～！
畢竟普渡的用意就是要歡迎好兄弟們來吃，當然也就不用避諱「招你來」了，
這樣反而還會害這些水果掉價，苦了農民和攤販！
說到底，還是拜自己也喜歡吃的東西最重要！
Paper／Ghost／Spirit money 紙錢／冥紙／銀紙
Joss paper 金紙
另一個幫助好兄弟的方法就是「燒紙錢」。
「紙錢」又有分「冥紙、銀紙」和「金紙」：
前者是專門給「非神明」使用的貨幣，可譯作 “paper/ghost/spirit money”；
後者是專門給「神明」使用的貨幣，可譯為 “Joss paper”，其中 “joss” 指「神像」。
而「燒」的動作可以說 “to burn”。
【例句】
On the Zhongyuan Festival, we also burn paper money, the currency of the underworld, for the homeless spirits.
在中元節，我們也會燒紙錢／冥紙，也就是陰間的貨幣，給那些無家可歸的遊魂們。
Chiang-gu 搶孤
搶孤通常舉行在鬼門關前最後一天，也就是農曆七月三十日，
用意有一說是要嚇跑那些未收心、流連忘返的好兄弟，所以派出壯丁和他們搶食物。
因為搶孤也是獨特的習俗，所以可以直接音譯成 “Chiang-gu” 就好，
之後再補充解釋活動內容即可。
【例句】
“Chiang-gu” is held on the last day of the Ghost month, in which groups of contestants climb up 11-meter tall poles greased with oil. The first group that reaches the top wins.
搶孤舉行在鬼月最後一天。在活動中，參賽組別會各自攀爬一根 11 公尺高、塗滿油的木竿子。第一個登頂的組別即獲勝。
“Chiang-gu” originated as a means to scare off the spirits still remaining in the world of the living one day before the gate to the Underworld closes.
「搶孤」的起源是要嚇跑鬼門關前一天還在人間流連忘返的鬼魂。
Release the water lantern 放水燈
在中元節放水燈，是為了指引鬼魂參加超度法會。
放水燈英文可以說 “release water lanterns/the water lantern”。
To release souls from purgatory 超渡
「超渡」用意是讓靈魂從痛苦中解脫，所以英文可以說：
“To release souls from purgatory”。
其中， “purgatory” 指「煉獄」、「苦難」。
【例句】
During the Ghost Festival, people release the water lantern to guide the wandering souls to a Taoist or Buddhist assembly where a priest of the religion chants to release them from purgatory.
人們會在鬼月放水燈，指引遊魂們前往道教或佛教的法會，並由該宗教的主持誦經超渡祂們。
