【慣用語】到底要用哪個「借」？ “Borrow” 和 “Lend” 的使用方式

你知道，「借」的英文在不同情況下要用不同的字嗎？ “borrow” 和 “lend” 對許多台灣人來說很難分辨，如果你也不太確定什麼時候要用哪一個動詞才對，別擔心，讀完這篇就會搞懂了！

Borrow

借用東西的時候，會使用 “borrow”，主詞為借入者。

I borrowed some great books from the library this week.

我這禮拜從圖書館借了一些很不錯的書。

You can borrow my jacket as long as you return it by Friday.

你可以借我的外套穿，只要在星期五前還我就好。

My brother let me borrow his car this weekend.

我哥這週末讓我借他的車開。

把東西借給別人時，就要使用 “lend”，主詞為出借者。

If you didn't bring a jacket, I'll lend you mine; it gets cold here at night.

如果你沒帶外套的話，我可以借你一件，這裡晚上很冷。

Cole never lends anything to anyone. He's so selfish!

Cole 從來不把東西借給別人的，他超級自私！

Can you lend me this tie? It would go nicely with a suit I'm wearing to an event this weekend.

可以借我這個領帶嗎？這和我這週末要穿去參加活動的西裝應該會很搭。

“Lend” 是不規則動詞，過去式為 “lent”。

My sister lent me this book. It's really good.

我姐借給我的這本書超好看。

The art collector lent some of his paintings to the local museum.

這位藝術收藏家出借了一些畫作給當地美術館。

注意：可以說 “lend me…” ，但沒有 “borrow me” 這個說法。

Can you lend me a few bucks until I get paid on Friday?

你可以在星期五發薪前借點錢給我嗎？

來比較看看以下兩句：

Can I borrow this book if you're done with it?

如果你看完了的話，我可以借走這本書嗎？

Can you lend me this book if you're done with it?

如果你看完了的話，可以借我這本書嗎？

“Borrow” 後面要接上物品，不可以接 “me” ，且動作的主詞是借入者； “lend” 的主詞則是出借者。
