“Even” 這個字在英文裡很常使用，相信大家對其最熟悉的解釋是「甚至」，
不過，這個字在英文裡不僅有這樣的副詞用法，還可以當作形容詞和名詞使用！
這次就和 Engoo 一起來看看 “even” 的各種不同用法吧！
形容詞 As an adjective
水平、光滑的（flat／smooth）
Even 作為形容詞的第一個意思是「物體表面光滑的」或是「水平的、處於同一平面的」。
【例句】
I need an even surface to conduct this experiment of friction.
我需要一個光滑的表面才能進行這項摩擦力的實驗。

平均、相當的（equal）
Even 第二個形容詞的意思是「相當的」，可以指「數字平均」或「實力、價值相當」。
【例句】
Those two fighters are about the same size and have the same amount of experience, so it's an even match.
這兩位選手體型相當，經驗也相差無幾，可以說是一場勢均力敵的比賽。
We all received an even split of the money.
我們每個人都收到了均分的款項。
平穩、變化不大的（continuous）
Even 也可以用來形容「持續發生、變化不大」的動作。
【例句】
He was a popular English teacher because of his even speaking tone and clear accent.
他因為講話語調平穩、口音清晰，所以成為了一位受歡迎的英文老師。
She ran the entire race at a smooth, even pace.
在整場賽跑中，她都以穩定、平均的速度發揮。
相反詞是 “uneven（不平均的／凹凸的）”，和 “even” 一樣都可以指有形的物體或無形的概念：
The road through the woods is bumpy and uneven.
穿過森林的路非常顛簸不平。
偶數的（can be divided exactly by two）
2、4、6、8、10 等「偶數」英文是「even numbers」。
【例句】
The star athlete demanded an even number for his jersey.
那位球星要求他球衣上的背號要是偶數。
而相反詞「奇數」則是 “odd numbers”：
Everyone whose ticket has an odd number, please line up here.
票券號碼是奇數的人請在這邊排隊。
去零頭
買賣時，常常會有 33 塊、 47 塊這種很難找的數字，
這時候就可以用 “even + 價格” 表達「去零頭」。
【例句】
They are $12 each, but you can have three for an even $30.
一個 12 塊錢，三個算你 30 就好。
動詞 As a verb
Even sth. out｜使...光滑、使...平均
Even 作為動詞時，常和介系詞 “out” 搭配，指「使...平均」，
在比賽中常指「追平比數」，而也可以作為比喻使用來指「打磨、調整」。
【例句】
Our team got many points at the start of the game, but the score began to even out as the match continued.
我們隊旗開得勝，但隨著比賽進行，分數逐漸被追平。
This report is good, but some sections need to be evened out before it's finished.
這份報告很好，但在完成前有些部分還需要打磨一下。
副詞 As an adverb
強調、甚至（emphasis）
這個用法就是各位最熟悉的「甚至」，表達「驚訝」、「極度」的語氣，
根據句中不同擺放位置，可以強調不同的點。
也不一定會翻譯成「甚至」，在中文我們也會說「就算是...」、「就連...都」。
【例句】
Even Shelly liked the performance, and she usually hates opera.
就連 Shelly 這麼討厭歌劇的人都喜歡那場表演了。
（這句強調「就連 Shelly」這種人，找一個極端值來強調該歌劇的好）
I have all of their music, even the rare, early records.
我有他們所有專輯，就連那些很稀少、早期的都有。
（這句強調「稀少、早期的專輯」）
They left already? They didn't even say goodbye!
他們離開了？甚至連再見都還沒講呢！
（這句強調「連再見都還沒講」，語氣透露出「怎麼能不說再見呢」之意）
Hey! Are you even listening to me?!
嘿！你到底有沒有在聽我說話？
（也就是要對方「注意聽」）
更高程度（comparison）
“Even” 也可以作為「程度副詞」，且會放在「比較級」之前，表達「更高程度」。
【例句】
I thought my hometown was cold, but it's even colder here!
本來以為我的家鄉已經很冷了，但沒想到這邊更冷！
She's working even harder than everyone expected.
她比其他人所想得還要更認真工作。
補充說明（extra information）
“Even” 可以用來補充說明其他資訊，這個用法偏正式（很像電影中英國紳士會講的話！）。
【例句】
That's a fantastic idea. Genius, even.
這個想法很棒。甚至可以說是天才。
Even 的片語
除了前面提過的 “even out” 外，這個字還有很多片語用法喔！
Even though｜雖然
其實 “even though” 指的就是 “though” 或 “although”，只是語氣上會更加強調且隨性，
但只能放在子句前面，不像上面兩種可以放句首、句中或句尾。
【例句】
I always get lost in the Taipei Main Station even though I've been there many times.
雖然我已經去過台北車站很多次了，但我每次總會在裡面迷路。
Even so｜但是
“Even so” 是 “however” 的同義詞，表達「與前面的資訊相反」。
【例句】
The weather forecast said it would be sunny today. Even so, I decided to bring an umbrella.
天氣預報說今天是大晴天。但是，我還是帶了雨傘。
Even if｜就算
“Even if” 通常用於表達「於事無補」、「結果不會改變」的語氣。
【例句】
Even if we left now, we would still be late.
就算我們現在出發也來不及。
I'll get the money, even if I have to work two jobs.
就算我要做兩份工作，我也會賺到這筆錢的。
To be even｜扯平／互不相欠
這個片語非常口語，指兩人「互不相欠」。
【例句】
If you help me move my couch this weekend, then we're even.
如果你這週幫我搬沙發，我們就互不相欠了。
英語母語者也常會說 “even Steven” 來增加語言的趣味，
其中 “Steven” 也沒有什麼意義、典故，純粹只是和 “even” 押韻而已。

Get even with sb.｜復仇
「復仇」其實就是因為對方做了某事而想要「扯平」，所以也可以說 “get even”。
【例句】
You think you've beaten me, but I'll get even with you one day!
你以為你已經打敗我了，但我有一天會向你復仇的！
「復仇」英文還可以說：
- To get revenge on sb.｜向某人復仇
- To seek vengeance｜尋仇
- To avenge sb.｜為某人復仇
I can’t even!｜我真的無言！
最後，這個用法應該可以說是現代最實用的！
“I can’t even” 就是中文的「我無言」、「我傻眼」，或是「我無從以對」，
是 “I can't even think of what to say/do” 的簡化版。
雖然中文好像大多數是用在負面情境，但其實這句英文片語是正面負面都適用喔！
【例句】
There's a huge spider in the bathroom! I can't even!
廁所有一隻大蜘蛛！我真的不知道該怎麼辦！
Why did you do that? I can’t even!
你為什麼要這樣做？我真的無言了。
