throw sb./sth. off 擺脫、甩掉

throw off 可以表示「甩掉、用力脫掉某樣東西」或是指「甩掉某個追在後面的人」。

【例】

Don’t throw off your socks on our bed.

別把你的襪子丟在我們床上。

throw in the towel 認輸、放棄

這可不是單純指「扔一條毛巾進去」，這句話的典故來自拳擊賽，

當某方的場邊教練向場內丟入一條毛巾，就有對裁判表示認輸之意，

雖然最終認輸與否仍取決於拳擊手意願，

但這個典故便被使用到現今用來表達「認輸、放棄」的意思。

【例】

The exam was so difficult that he threw in the towel.

這個考試對他來說太困難，因此他決定放棄了。

throw caution to the wind 豁出去

字面上解釋成「把所有的小心謹慎都丟到風中」，

就是把顧慮、擔憂都拋到腦後，豁出去做；

也具有一些負面的意思，表示一個人未經過考慮就魯莽行事。

【例】

Tina threw caution to the wind and bought a ticket to Japan.

Tina豁出去買了一張到日本的機票。

throw together 倉促組成、完成

想像一下把所有需要的東西全都倉促地丟在一起，

可見這件事或東西沒有經過妥善規劃就希望能快速完成。

【例】

We were all thrown together at midnight to discuss the problem.

我們半夜倉促地聚在一起討論這個問題。

throw a tantrum 耍脾氣

tantrum表示「發脾氣、發怒」的意思，常見的搭配動詞有have、throw，

因此當你要說發脾氣時，就以have/throw a tantrum表示就可以了。

【例】

The little boy threw a tantrum because his parents wouldn't buy him what he wanted.

這個小男孩因為父母不願意買他想要的東西而耍脾氣。

throw sb in at the deep end 使某人做最困難的事

deep end是泳池深水區的意思，當你把一個人往深水區一扔，

表示你想要給予他試驗，讓他去挑戰一些困難的事物或工作，並且不打算給予幫助。

【例】

Anna’s mom threw her in at the deep end by telling her to go to school alone.

Anna的媽媽叫她嘗試自己去上學。

throw down the gauntlet 下戰帖、提出挑戰

gauntlet是防護手套、鐵護手套的意思，

在古代當你向對方丟下自己的手套是一個具有汙辱性的動作，

表示你要向他提出挑戰之意。另外，

pick up/take up the gauntlet 則表示你接受了挑戰。

【例】

The soldier threw down the gauntlet to his enemy.

這名士兵向敵人提出挑戰。

throw money down the drain 浪費錢

drain有排水孔的意思，把錢都丟到排水孔裡，

和中文付諸東流的意思差不多，都是指浪費、白費。

【例】

Ken felt frustrated because all the money he invested in the project was thrown down the drain.

Ken感到很沮喪，因為他投入到這個專案項目的金錢都將付諸東流了。
