【英文口說】只會說Again嗎？十個英文句型讓你有禮貌地請對方「說清楚」

英文學習者最常遇到的問題之一就是聽不懂對方在說什麼。
可能是因為對方的口音特殊，
或是因為一些非常口語化的連音，
導致常常需要請對方再講一次。
這時很多人會習慣只說一句 “Again?”
但其實這算是比較沒有禮貌的說法喔！

還能讓你聽起來更專業！
What do you mean by ... ?
____是什麼意思？
當對方講了一個你聽不懂的單字或片語時，
最直接的方式就是用 “What do you mean by … ?”
請他再解釋一下。
如果想要更有禮貌一點，可以用
"I'm not sure what you mean by … . "
（我不確定你說___是什麼意思。）
這個直述句型。
【例句】
- Sorry, what do you mean by that?
不好意思，請問那是什麼意思呢？ - I'm not sure what you mean by "formal dress code." Could you show me some examples?
我不太知道你所指的「正式服裝」是什麼意思。可以給我一些範例嗎？
I don’t understand.
我不太理解。
另一個禮貌地要求對方再解釋一次的方法
就是用 “I don't understand” 讓對方知道自己沒有理解。
也可以說 “I'm not sure that I understand.” 。
【例句】
- Sorry, I don't understand your question. Would you mind rephrasing it for me?
抱歉，我不太理解你的問題，可以請你再換個方式問一次嗎？ - Hmm, I'm not sure I understand. Could you explain that again?
嗯......我不確定我有沒有理解。可以請你再解釋一次嗎？
I’m (a little) confused.
我不是很清楚。
除了 “I don't understand.” 外，
也可以用 “I'm a (little) confused.”
來表示自己沒有理解清楚。
【例句】
- Sorry, I'm confused. Should I take this medicine three times a day or four?
不好意思，我不是很清楚我應該是要一天吃三次藥還是四次。 - I'm a little confused about what you just said.
我對於你剛剛說的事情不是很清楚。
I don’t (quite) follow.
我理解得不是很清楚。
“I don't (quite) follow.” 是 “I don't understand.” 和 “I'm confused.” 的另一種說法。
【例句】
- Hmm, I don't quite follow you. Could you explain that to me again?
嗯......我好像不是很理解你說的。可以請你再解釋給我聽一遍嗎？ - I'm afraid I'm not following. Could you be more specific?
我想我可能沒有很理解你說的。可以請你再解釋地更詳細一點嗎？
You mean … ?
你的意思是 …… 嗎？
如果覺得自己似懂非懂，又不想麻煩人家再說一次，
你可以用 “You mean … ?” 或是完整的 “Do you mean … ?”
來直接告訴對方你對所說內容的解讀，
如果錯誤的話，通常對方都會主動再解釋一次，
而要是正確的話，也可以有雙重確認的效果，
可說是一舉兩得。
【例句】
A: Does Thursday work for you?
星期四你可以嗎？
B: You mean tomorrow? Or a week from now?
你是指明天嗎？還是下禮拜四？
As in …
是指 …… 嗎？
和 “You mean … ?” 一樣，
“as in …” 有 “in the sense of …” 或 “meaning …” 的意思，
都可以用來表達自己對事情的理解。
【例句】
A: Does Thursday work for you?
星期四你可以嗎？
B: Thursday as in tomorrow?
你是指明天的那個禮拜四嗎？
So you're saying ... ?
所以你是說 …… 嗎？
“So you're saying … ?” 也是一種確認自己理解有沒有誤的說法。
【例句】
A: Do you believe in aliens?
你相信有外星人嗎？
B: Well, the universe is big, and there's still a lot we don’t know about it.
宇宙是個很大的地方，我們對它的理解也很有限。
A: So you're saying aliens might exist?
所以你是說外星人真的有可能存在嗎?
B: Yeah, I think it's likely.
沒錯，我覺得很有可能。
If I understand you correctly …
如果我的理解沒錯，......？
比起上面提到的幾個確認自己理解的句型，
“If I understand you correctly” 會稍微更正式一點。
【例句】
- So if I understand you correctly, you feel that you were unfairly fired from your job?
如果我沒理解錯的話，你覺得你被解雇是件很不公平的事，對嗎？ - Let me see if I understand you correctly. You're saying that this policy would create 10 million new jobs?
如果我理解正確的話，你的意思是這個政策會創造上千萬個工作機會，對嗎？
有時候可能也會聽到母語人士用過去式 “If I understood you correctly.”，
所以現在式和過去式都是可以的喔！
Could you elaborate (on that)?
可以更詳細一點說明嗎？
“Elaborate” 這個動詞有「詳細說明」的意思，
也是請求對方再說一次時很好用的字！
注意！如果Elaborate後面要接名詞的話要加on喔！
【例句】
- Sorry, could you elaborate, please?
不好意思，可以請你詳細說明嗎？ - Could you elaborate on that for me? I'm not sure I follow.
可以請你詳細說明這一點嗎？我不太確定我的理解有沒有正確。
Could you break that down for me?
可以請你分段解釋給我聽嗎？
“Break something down” 這個動詞片語的意思是「拆解某樣東西」，
在這裡就是請對方將整件事情或整個計畫分開來解釋。
【例句】
- I think I know what you mean, but could you break that down for me?
我大致上理解你說的，不過可以還是請你再分段解釋一次嗎？ - Could you break that down for me? How much money did he steal and who are all the victims?
你可以再慢慢地解釋一次給我聽嗎？他偷了多少錢，還有所有的受害者總共有哪幾位？
