【易混淆字】Last、Latest、Lastly、Lately，這些長很像的單字有什麼不同嗎？讓Engoo告訴你！
英文單字中有許多長的相似的單字，常常讓人混淆、搞不清楚，
你知道last, latest, at least, latter, later, lately, outlast, lastly這八個單字的差別嗎?

首先，先辨別later、latest、latter、last這四個單字，他們是late的比較級和最高級變化，
分別有不同的意思，並產生了兩組變化，當late表示的是時間上的晚、遲，
他的比較級就是later、最高級latest；如果late的意思是指次序上的後面、後者，則是以latter表示比較級，last最高級。

一、later 以後、後來
He didn’t have a girlfriend during later years.
他後來那幾年都沒有交女朋友。
1. later與表示時間的名詞連用可以表示"...之後"的意思
He safely came home twenty days later.
20天後，他平安的回家了。
2. 後期的、晚期的
This is not the topic today. We will discuss this in detail in a later chapter.
這不是今天的主題，我們將在以後的章節中對這一點作詳細的探討。
二、latest
1. late的最高級，表示最慢、最遲。
Why are you so busy these days? You always came the latest and left the earliest.
你最近為什麼這麼忙?你總是來的最晚，走的最早。
2. 最近、最新
This is J.K. Rowling’s latest book.
這是J.K. Rowling最新的書。
3. 做名詞用，表示最新消息。
Have you heard the latest about the competition?
你有聽到有關比賽的最新消息嗎?
三、latter
latter是late在次序意義上的比較級，常與the連用，
以the latter表示兩件事物的後者，而前者則是以the former呈現。
Of the two choices, I prefer the latter.
兩個選擇中，我更喜歡後者。
四、last
1. last表示最後的，而first則表示第一個
I was the last to leave the classroom this afternoon. And I didn’t see anyone strange.
我是下午最後離開教室的人，我沒有看到任何奇怪、可疑的人。
2. last表示上一次的、已經過去的，和next意思相對
We met at school last Monday and talked a lot.
我們上週一約了在學校見面，也聊了很多話。
3. " the last + 名詞 " 則常用來表達最不合適、最不可能、最不願意
Tommy is the last man I expected to see there.
Tommy是我萬萬沒想到會在那裡遇見的人。
五、lately
lately和recently意思相近，表達的是最近、近來的意義。
I haven’t called Mom lately.
最近我都沒打給媽媽。
六、lastly
表示最後的，而 finally, at last, lastly, in the end 在中文翻譯裡都有最後、
終於或經過一段時間的意思，但使用方法有所不同。
1. finally是在說經過一段時間後總算發生的事，一般常是歷經困難、波折後會使用。
There were no buses then and we finally got home at 4 pm.
那時已經沒有公車了，我們最後凌晨4點才到家。
2. at last通常是經過很長一段延後，可能有不耐煩的情緒時，
用來安慰自己或他人，大意為至少最後...(得到什麼、做了什麼等)。
She has at last given me back my book that she promised to return to me.
至少她最後有把她答應要還我的書歸還。
3. lastly常見情況是在說眾多的人、項目的最後一個。
I am honored to receive this award. I really thanked my company, my parents,
but lastly, I must thank all my friends for their help.
我很榮幸得到這個獎。我真的很感謝我的公司、父母，
而最後我也要感謝所有幫助我的朋友。
4. in the end表達的是一種在歷經一段長時間的變動或討論後的最後結果。
And then, in the end, after months of discussion they agreed on her suggestion.
接著，在經過數月的討論後，最終他們同意她的建議。
七、outlast
表示比…活得長；比…持續時間長。
The old lady outlasted all her children. It was sad that she had to see her children die before her.
那個老太太比她所有孩子都長壽。白髮人送黑髮人令人心痛。
八、at least
表示不管如何、至少、反正。
You'll have to wait for at least an hour.
你至少要等一個小時。
Even if she didn't want to come to your wedding, she could at least have sent a congratulation to you.
即使不想來參加婚禮，她起碼也應該給妳個祝賀。
