【節慶英文】Happy Lunar New Year！！農曆新年、過年食物及吉祥話英文大全

Engoo 之前曾發布過一篇關於「馬」的文章，文章中也介紹十二生肖。這次將介紹關於農曆新年、食物與吉祥話的英文單字與說法！

趁著這次年假跟著 Engoo 一起把這些單字背起來，明年繼續用！

常見農曆新年單字

農曆（陰曆）的英文為 “lunar calendar”，而 “lunar” 意指「月亮的」。那與太陽相關的陽曆英文就為 “solar calendar”。

台灣傳統新年是依照農曆來看，所以「農曆新年」的英文可以用 “Lunar New Year” 來表示。除了這個說法，“Spring Festival” 與 “Chinese New Year” 也都是常見的說法喔！

【例句】

Lunar New Year is one of the most important festivals in many Asian cultures.

農曆新年是許多亞洲文化當中最重要的節日之一。

“eve” 表示「前夕、前日」之意，如同聖誕節前夕的平安夜稱作 “Christmas Eve”。而農曆新年的前一天就是 “Lunar New Year’s Eve”。

【例句】

Lunar New Year’s Eve is a time for family reunions.

大家會在除夕當天回到家裡團圓。

“reunion” 這個字可以拆成 “re（再次）+ union（結合、聯合）”，因此 “reunion” 意指「團圓」。而「團圓飯」通常是吃晚餐，所以英文稱為 “reunion dinner”。

【例句】

The reunion dinner is the most important meal of the year for many families.

團圓飯對許多家庭來說是一年當中最重要的一餐。

相信大家對紅包的英文不陌生，“envelope” 泛指「信封」，而前面加上 “red（紅色的）” 就是我們新年最愛的 “red envelope（紅包）”。

【例句】

Children usually receive red envelopes as a blessing during the Lunar New Year.

在農曆新年時，小孩子通常會收到紅包當作祝福。

鞭炮的英文為 “firecracker”。在英文當中，如果想表達「放鞭炮」，可以說 “light the firecrackers” 來表示，“light” 作動詞時有「點亮、點燃」之意。

另外，“set off” 這組片語動詞也可以用在放鞭炮這個動作上，表示 “set off the firecrackers”。

值得注意的是，「煙火」的英文為 “firework”，切勿與 “firecracker（鞭炮）” 搞混喔！！

【例句】

Firecrackers are believed to scare away bad luck.

普遍認為鞭炮可以驅趕壞運氣。

“couplet” 在英文中意指長度與韻腳相同的「對句」，因此「春聯」可以直接翻譯成 “spring couplet”，或說是 “New Year couplet”。

【例句】

He wrote the spring couplets by hand.

他手寫春聯。

大家過年的時候應該都會到廟裡拜拜，而我們手中拿的香，英文為 “incense sticks”。

“incense” 一詞指的是用於宗教儀式的「香」，而 “stick” 意指「枝條、條狀物」。

【例句】

The air in the temple was filled with the scent of incense sticks.

廟裡充滿著香的氣味。

過年食物	吉祥話
dumplings 餃子	招財進寶：May wealth come to you.
rice cake (new year cake) 年糕、發糕	步步高陞：May you have great progress in your career/study.升官發財：Wish you advancement and wealth.
radish / daikon 白蘿蔔	好彩頭：Wish you a wonderful beginning of the year.
mustard greens 長年菜（芥菜）	長命百歲：Wish you longevity.
Chinese chives 韭菜	長長久久：May you be with your loved ones forever.
pineapples 鳳梨	（財源）旺來：Wishing you prosperity and wealth.
sweet dumplings / rice balls 湯圓	事事圓滿：May you have a successful year and pull off everything perfectly.
fish 魚	年年有餘：May there be extra fortune/harvest every year.
