中元節又到了！臺灣「祭祀」的文化可說是夙負盛名，
外國遊客到來，必定造訪各種宮廟，以感受民間信仰文化的薰陶。
特別是小編家鄉——台南，更是有著堪比超商密度的宮廟，
遍佈城市及鄉下的大街小巷！
這次 Engoo 就來和各位分享臺灣民間常見的各種神明英文翻譯，
學起來，就能和外國朋友介紹家鄉的文化！
神祇英文怎麼翻譯？
一般臺灣常見的神明，比較難透過「名字」來讓外國人了解各自執掌的面向，
所以最簡單的翻譯方式就是直譯或音譯，搭配詳細介紹、解說即可。
接下來就來學習各個常見神明的英文翻譯吧！
Jade Emperor｜玉皇大帝／天公
首先要提到的就是臺灣民間信仰地位最高的神明——玉皇大帝（aka 天公），
英文一般會直接翻成 “Jade”（玉）＋ “Emperor”（皇帝）。
另外，各個廟宇都會有的「香爐」英文是 “censer”，
可以用來解釋玉皇大帝的「天公爐」（音譯：Tiangong Lu）。
【例句】
The Jade Emperor is the highest god in the Taiwanese popular religion.
玉皇大帝是臺灣民間信仰中地位最高的神明。
In Taiwanese temples, worship ritual begins at the Tiangong Lu, a censer dedicated to the Jade Emperor.
臺灣廟宇參拜流程始於「天公爐」，也就是專為玉皇大帝而設的香爐。
Holy Emperor Guan／Guan Yu｜關聖帝君／關羽
「關聖帝君」英文可以用 “Holy Emperor Guan”，也就是直譯「聖」、「帝」；
或是 “Guan Yu” 音譯關羽的名字。
另外搭配解釋關聖帝君是軍警、司法人員會祭拜的神祇，
並且來自於三國時期最重情義的武將「關羽」。
【例句】
In Taoism, the Holy Emperor Guan is worshipped as the guardian deity of the military, law enforcers, judicial officers, merchants, and even gangsters.
道教中的關聖帝君是軍人、執法人員、司法人員、商人，甚至是幫派的守護神。
The Holy Emperor Guan is actually Guan Yu, the historical general of the Three Kingdoms period, who was famous for his unwavering loyalty and righteousness.
關聖帝君其實就是歷史上三國時期的大將——關羽，祂以堅毅不搖的忠誠、正直聞名。

玄天上帝掌管消災解厄、斬妖除魔，同時也被奉為「戰神」，
另外也保佑信眾身體健康、財源廣進，可說是包山包海！
英文名稱可以直接音譯，而「玄天」二字若要解釋的話，

Xuantian Shandi, worshipped as the god of warriors in Taoism, is believed to possess the power to expel evil, shield against misfortune, and bless his followers with good health and prosperity.
玄天上帝在道教中被奉為戰神，並擁有除惡、擋災及保佑信眾健康、興旺的力量。
Baosheng Emperor｜保生大帝
保生大帝是醫護人員的守護神，並且病者亦會向其祈求身體康復、問籤詩。
「保生」一樣可以直接音譯 Baosheng；「大帝」則是同「皇帝」 “emperor”。
【例句】
In Taiwanese popular religion, the Baosheng Emperor is the god of medicine, who is worshipped by medical personnel and patients.
臺灣民間信仰中，保生大帝是醫藥之神，醫事人員及患者皆會祭拜之。
Sick patients would turn to the Baosheng Emperor and ask for a fortune poem to gain insight into their condition.
病患會向保生大帝祈求籤詩，以明瞭病情。
Shen Nong Emperor｜神農大帝
神農大帝即是嚐百草的神農氏，
與保生大帝一樣同為醫藥之神，為醫事人員所拜，
另外也是農民的守護神。
名字一樣以音譯為 “Shen Nong” 即可！
【例句】
Legend has it that the Shen Nong Emperor tasted hundreds of herbs in order to find cures for the sick during his lifetime as a human.
傳說神農大帝在世之時，曾嚐百草以為病人找尋解藥。
The Shen Nong Emperor is believed to have been the first to develop agricultural techniques in ancient China, which is why he is worshipped by farmers.
據說神農大帝是中國上古時代，首位發展出農耕技術的人，這也是祂被農民所供俸的原因。
Tudi Gong／Earth Deity｜土地公
土地公可說是臺灣最常見的神祇，
英文除了音譯 “Tudi Gong”，也能以 “Earth Deity”、 “Earth God”，
表達「土地之神」的意思。
【例句】
Every district has its own Tudi Gong, or Earth Deity, who blesses the local people with peace and prosperity.
每個地區都有土地公，會保佑當地人民平安、興隆。

God｜神（專指地位更崇高的神，其中 “G” 大寫時特指基督教中的「上帝」）
Caishen／God of Fortune｜財神
過年初五迎「財神」，英文可以意譯為 “God of Fortune”，
當然也可以音譯為 “Caishen”。
【例句】
It is a tradition to welcome Caishen, the God of Fortune, into one’s house on the fifth day of Chinese New Year.
農曆新年初五有著恭迎財神進入家裡的傳統。
Yue Lao／God of Marriage｜月老、月下老人
無論是單身男女，或是希望感情加溫的情侶，
都會去拜「月老」。
其名可音譯為 “Yue Lao”，並解釋為 “the old man under the moon” 之意；
或可直接譯為 “God of Marriage”（婚姻之神）。
【例句】
Yue Lao is the deity who helps people find their ideal partner or strengthen their romantic relationships.
月老是位幫助人們找尋理想對象或增進感情的神祇。
Yue Lao, the God of Marriage, connects destined couples with the Red Thread tied around their pinky fingers.
婚姻之神——月老將命中註定的伴侶，以綁在小指上的紅線牽在一起。

Mazu/Matsu｜媽祖
媽祖是海神，保佑出海人平安，
也是直接音譯成 “Mazu” 或 “Matsu” 即可，並再另外補充解釋。
【例句】
In folk religion, Mazu is the Goddess of the Sea who protects fishers and sailors.
在民信信仰中，媽祖是保護漁民及出海人的海洋女神。
Wenchang Dijun／Emperor Wenchang｜文昌帝君
最後就是考生、教師必拜的「文昌帝君」啦！
可以音譯為 “Wenchang Dijun”，或是 “Emperor Wenchang”。
另外也可以解釋成 “God of Passing Exams/Study”。
【例句】
Before important exams or tests, test takers turn to Wenchang Dijun, the God of Passing Exams, to pray for good grades.
重要大考前，考生會向考試之神文昌帝君祈求有好成績。
